The Old Catholic Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception

Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral offers a great deal of history, right down to the Chinese-cut granite foundation and bricks crafted in New England. The interior follows a Neo-Gothic style and includes stained glass. Candles keep the wall-side shrines lit lowly. Historical artifacts are also on display.

At one time, Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral’s spire made it the tallest building in the city. As the city grows, this Cathedral maintains its community’s missionary philosophy in a structure rich with history. The exterior bricks were made in New England and then brought around Cape Horn, and its foundation of granite was cut in China.

Enter Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Chinatown to find stained glass and Neo-Gothic architectural elements, such as vaulted arches. Shrines lining the walls are lit with votives to keep reflection in the right light. Visitors will also notice display cases of historical items telling a story, while creating the Cathedral’s timeline. They even include photos of the havoc caused by the earthquake and fire of 1906.

Chinatown & North Beach are for many, the most interesting areas of San Francisco. Just blocks away from Union Square, Grant Street’s Chinatown Gate gives way to a different world: shops filled with imports from China, restaurants specializing in dim sum, and tiny alleyways filled with fluttering clothing drying on clothes lines strung between apartments. North Beach, once haunt of the Beats, is home to San Francisco’s Little Italy. Expect the legendary restaurants, clubs, and exotic fun you’ve heard about here.
