Also known as Castle Square
The Piazza Castello, or Castle Square, was commissioned by Carlo Emmanuele I and originally designed by Ascanio Vitozzi in the mid 16th century. Historically it was the “power base” of the Dukes of Savoy.
Today, since the most popular and important central streets begin in the square, the Piazza Castello has become a location for cars, buses, trams and pedestrians to compete en route.
Palazzo Madama, a medieval castle with a baroque façade, is in the square's center, and the Piazza also includes other surrounding architectural beauties such as The Royal Palace, The Royal Library and The Royal Theater. The Church of San Lorenzo is also nearby. There are sheltered areas surrounding the Piazza Castello, and visitors can find several shops and cafés, as well as an ice rink in the winter.
